God dammit our country is fucking stupid. It probably doesn't help that so many people believe our planet is the center of the universe, since..... you know... GOD.

We do need to fund science, REAL science, and medical advances. Not 30 new ways to pop a boner. How about someone cracks the code to make us live an extra 100 years?

My housemate teaches a number of science classes. I get to help grade the papers sometimes. I am always amazed at the answers.

This is one of the many reasons I chose to take honors/AP classes in school... I hate being in the classroom with idiots who don't bother trying to learn. (This isn't always the case, not trying to sound like a douche)

It's pretty fucking sad that people don't bother to learn what most 4th graders know.

Yea, the Earth-goes-'round-the-Sun thing isn't exactly a new discovery either. The Founding Fathers knew of it, but certain of their children have forgotten.

Oh well. But Americans are usually a glass-half-full kinda people so maybe look at it this way, "74% of Americans know the Earth revolves around the Sun!"

Real quotes from my students over the past 9 years, grades 9-12

"Wait...there are TWO Americas?"

"How come it's called ground beef...if it doesn't come from the ground?"

"High tide means there are a lot of boats in the water."

"Is George Washington dead?

"I thought if you got hit by lighting you got super powers"

I can keep going...

Wait you mean you don't get superpowers from lightning? I guess i should stop running around outside with a metal pole in thunderstorms.

In all seriousness though lightning has been my favorite force of nature after watching a transformer get struck when I was about 6 or 7, and explode in a great blue light.

My son is really interested in science and wanted a telescope for Christmas when he was 5. We talk about science stuff all the time but when he asks about God, the conversation gets really tricky. I'm an ateist, but religion on even a casual level is quite visible and trying to explain to him that God doesn't exist is almost like telling him that Santa isn't real. I haven't found the right path yet but I'm sure it will get easier as he grows older. But when I see articles like the one above, I fear for the future of our children!

Sigh, I thought Oppo was the place I could go to get away from arguments about religion and things. Oh well. There are some religious people (myself included) who know quite a bit about science and math. Ignorance comes in many forms, as does knowledge. In short - Is there something wrong with the state of education (not only in the sciences but in languages and arts)? Yes. Can we blame this on religion? No.

Kinja'd!!! Joe_Limon > will_kern
02/14/2014 at 21:20

Kinja'd!!!1

My post was intended to deflect away from religious hate, because clearly it isn't religion that is generating all the hate. It is our education system. I personally believe that all schools should teach about religions. Everything from Bhuddists, to Scientologists. Society in general has a very poor understanding of all of our minorities. We shouldn't be cutting them out, we should be properly teaching about them without bias. Because if our schools don't future generations have no chance of learning about them without bias.

Kinja'd!!! Nick drives Stick (not Stig) > Leadbull

Correct, but it can disprove plenty of things written in the Bible! Everyone has the right to believe in what they think is right. I respect all religions as long as they are not hateful or extreme. I just choose to teach my son's what I believe in, which is science and evolution as well as respecting other people's beliefs and oppinions!

To my mind those kinds of stats tend to demonstrate that 1 in 4 people won't read the question, or will give a silly answer, or something along those lines. It's more believable that way.
